Car bursts into flames on Lakeview Avenue

A car stopped at the corner of Lakeview and Hempstead avenues burst into flames yesterday evening, but was luckily extinguished by a nearby firefighter who was stopped at the light.

Lynbrook firefighter Dan Neri was driving his car and stopped for the traffic light at Hendrickson and Franklin avenues when the car across the intersection went on fire. Neri pulled over and ran to grab an extinguisher from the Fu Wai Chinese restaurant in the Cross Island Fruits Shopping Center. He successfully knocked down the fire, which started in the rear engine compartment and had flames rising over the roof.

Malverne firefighters arrived shortly after and used a booster line to wet down the engine compartment. There were no injuries.
