The U.S. Coast Guard celebrated the opening of its new Long Island recruiting office in Lynbrook on Oct. 3, bringing Coast Guard personnel, local officials, veterans and future service members together for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new recruiting center, at 235 Sunrise Highway near Denton Avenue, establishes a dedicated Coast Guard recruiting presence on Long Island and will serve prospective recruits from communities across Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The office gives Long Islanders interested in joining the Coast Guard a local place to meet directly with recruiters, ask questions and learn about active-duty and reserve opportunities, training and careers within the service. Previously, prospective recruits from Long Island generally had to travel into New York City to meet with a Coast Guard recruiter.

Capt. Jay W. Guyer, commander of the Coast Guard Accessions Service Center, joined Coast Guard personnel for the grand opening, which included a ribbon cutting, remarks and displays highlighting the service and its work.

Lynbrook Village Trustee Robert Boccio represented the village at the ceremony and made a presentation welcoming the Coast Guard recruiting office to the community.

Members of Lynbrook American Legion Post 335 were also on hand for the opening, including Steve Grogan and Bill Marinaccio. Other veterans and former Coast Guard members joined community representatives and service members for the celebration.

The ceremony also marked the beginning of a new chapter for six Long Island high school seniors, who took the oath of enlistment as part of the Coast Guard’s Delayed Entry Program.

The new Lynbrook office will serve as a point of contact for Long Islanders considering Coast Guard service, providing prospective recruits with an opportunity to speak with personnel and learn about career paths without having to make the trip into New York City.
