Three East Rockaway Jr./Sr. High School students were among four Long Island students honored with scholarships at Career Day Inc.’s annual Summer Soirée on Aug. 20 at the President’s House at Nassau Community College.
Elaiah Visarra received the Arie A. Bucheister Memorial Scholarship, while Yihan Wang and Winter Lara each received the Cattry Family Career Day Inc. STEM Scholarship. Visarra was unable to attend the Aug. 20 celebration.
The students were recognized for their achievements and for the connections they made with professionals through Career Day Inc. Visarra was inspired by Isabella Ferguson, a staff attorney at Global Industrial; Wang by Dan Kahn, a former chemical engineer; and Lara by Staff Sgt. Hemchandra Rajcoomar, an Army recruiter serving Long Island.
Career Day Inc. brings professionals from a range of fields into local schools to speak with students about their careers, education and experiences. The organization was founded in 2003 in memory of Arie Bucheister and has since expanded its work through partnerships with BOCES and support from private and corporate donors.
“Career Day Inc. was founded on the belief that introducing young people to professionals and career opportunities can have a lasting impact on their futures,” founder Beth Bucheister said. “These four students represent what our mission is all about.”
The Summer Soirée brought together students, educators, business leaders and community supporters to celebrate the scholarship recipients and Career Day Inc.’s work connecting young people with professionals.
