Six students in East Rockaway’s Extended School Year elementary program traded the classroom for the beach on July 15, taking part in the district’s third annual surf clinic with the Long Beach nonprofit Surfer’s Way.

The organization, which provides free surfing clinics for children with special needs, welcomed the students to Riverside Beach, where volunteer instructors helped each child safely experience riding the waves for the first time.

Accompanied by family members and ESY staff, the students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, showing determination and confidence as they learned to surf. After their time in the water, the group enjoyed the beach before returning to Rhame Avenue.

District officials thanked Surfer’s Way and its volunteers for providing the students with a memorable summer experience and an opportunity to build confidence while having fun.
