Anthony J. “Tony” Santino, 64, a longtime public servant who served as supervisor of the Town of Hempstead and most recently as a trustee for the Village of East Rockaway, has died following an undisclosed illness.
Santino’s decades-long career in government and community service left a lasting mark on Long Island. Before becoming Hempstead’s chief executive, he served as a town board member, where he became the longest-tenured member of his party to hold the position.
A lifelong East Rockaway resident, Santino attended Centre Avenue School and East Rockaway High School before earning his bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, from St. John’s University. He began his career in public service working for the late U.S. Rep. Norman F. Lent, eventually becoming his district director.
Santino began his first stint on the East Rockaway village board at 22 in 1983. He also served as deputy mayor for two years.
In a statement, the Village of East Rockaway said it mourns Santino’s passing “with deep sorrow and heartfelt respect,” calling him “a loyal son of our community, a devoted public servant, and a cherished friend and neighbor whose legacy of service and love for East Rockaway will never be forgotten.”
Beyond politics, Santino was deeply involved in local faith and civic organizations. For more than 40 years, he served as a lector at St. Raymond’s Church and was active in groups including the Knights of Columbus, East Rockaway Kiwanis Club, and the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America.
Village officials said Santino remained engaged in village affairs even during his final weeks, offering guidance and support to his colleagues.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
