Summer has a way of bringing Rockville Centre to life. From longstanding traditions to evenings we spend together on the Village Green, the months ahead will be filled with the moments that make our community special.
This week, we came together for a Memorial Day ceremony, even though the rain prevented us from holding our annual parade. Memorial Day reminds us of the sacrifices made to preserve our freedoms, and it was heartening to see our community once again gather in remembrance.
In the weeks and months ahead, our calendar will be crowded with cherished events that bring neighbors, families and friends together. One of the highlights of the season will be the return of the Vintage Car and Fire Truck Show on June 6, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Parking Field 2. The annual show offers residents of all ages the opportunity to step back in time and appreciate the craftsmanship and history behind these remarkable vehicles. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or simply looking for a unique and enjoyable morning, it’s an event not to be missed.
We’re also excited about the return of Music on the Green, a favorite summer tradition of live performances. This year’s lineup includes Those Damn Neighbors, on June 25; the Basement, on July 30; and another performance, to be announced, on Aug. 27. I encourage everyone to bring a blanket or chair, gather with friends and enjoy these special nights under the summer sky.
Another cornerstone of the season is our annual Fireworks Celebration and Concert. This year’s event will take place on July 11 at Pette and Barasch fields. It will feature a performance by the South Shore Symphony, followed by the renowned Grucci fireworks display, synchronized to music. It is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together in celebration, and we look forward to another memorable night.
As we enjoy these traditions, we are also continuing to make meaningful improvements to village services. One is the transition from the Flowbird parking app to ParkMobile, expected to be completed by June 30. This change will give residents and visitors a more seamless and user-friendly parking experience while maintaining all existing meters and infrastructure. During the transition, both apps will operate concurrently to ensure continuity. ParkMobile’s expanded platform, improved reliability and ease of use will enhance the overall experience for everyone who lives in or visits our village.
Our commitment to the future of Rockville Centre is also reflected in our ongoing focus on sustainability. Some 72 new trees were recently planted throughout the village as part of both the 2025 Road Program and the Rockville Centre Conservancy’s annual Tree Program. While these initiatives serve different purposes, together they expand our tree canopy, beautify our neighborhoods and strengthen our environment for generations to come. We’re especially grateful to the conservancy for its continued partnership, including the generous donation of a maple tree planted in front of the Recreation Center.
That same spirit of partnership was evident at a recent village board meeting, at which the Chamber of Commerce presented a $10,000 contribution to the Beautification Committee. This generous support will help continue the important work of enhancing our shared spaces and maintaining the village’s character and charm. We’re thankful for the chamber’s ongoing commitment to our community.
I also congratulate the chiefs and elected officers of the Rockville Centre Fire Department following their recent swearing-in ceremony. We commend Chief of Department Tony Rugolo, 1st Assistant Chief Patrick Healey and 2nd Assistant Chief Brian O’Toole, along with 4th Battalion delegate and Ex-Chief Mark Murray. Their dedication, leadership and service are vital to the safety and well-being of our residents, and we wish them a safe and successful year ahead.
As summer begins, Rockville Centre continues to be defined by its strong sense of community, civic pride and shared purpose. Whether gathering for a concert, enjoying a local event or working together to improve our village, these are the moments that bring us closer and make Rockville Centre such a special place to call home.
I look forward to seeing you throughout the season.
Francis X. Murray is the mayor of Rockville Centre.
