Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre hosts Torah writing event

Posted

This year, Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre has embarked on a journey of a lifetime with Mitzvah 613, the project to write a new Torah scroll that will be read each week in the sanctuary. The new Torah scroll will be used by many generations for years to come.

On Sunday, March 18, congregants met Sofer (scribe) Zerach Greenfield and participate in the writing of the new Torah scroll. Each congregant had the opportunity to share a sensory connection to the shape of the letters, the texture of the parchment, and the concentration of the scribe, as he uses his quill to write the words that God imparted to Moses.

The completion of the new Torah scroll will allow the congregation to fulfill another mitzvah: HERJC will donate an existing Torah scroll to an Israeli community in need.
