John Keating, superintendent of the East Rockaway Department of Public Works, died on May 12 after a short illness. He was 56.

Keating was a 31-year member of the East Rockaway Fire Department and an ex-captain of Vigilante Engine Company #1.

“John was not only a great friend but also a brother volunteer firemen and colleague,” said Fire Department secretary, administrator and ex-chief Thomas A. Smith. “No matter what the reason, you could always rely on John for his assistance and advice. A true friend to all who will be dearly missed.”

Born on Nov. 24, 1953, Keating was the youngest son of the late June and Al Keating. A lifelong resident of East Rockaway, he attended St. Raymond’s School and East Rockaway High School, graduating in 1971. After high school he attended the Nassau BOCES Engineering and Technology Program for Carpentry. While building the Rock Rivalry refreshment stand, Keating began dating his high school sweetheart, Kathy Crockett. They were married in 1977 and raised two daughters, Kristen and Leigh Ann.

“My dad was a great man,” said Kristen Keating. “He was simply the best. ... Everything he did was for me, my sister and my mom. He was very protective of us, but not overly strict. He just wanted us to be who we were, and to be happy and loved.”

Keating worked in the construction business for many years, first as an employee for Charlie Varney. He eventually purchased the business and renamed it John K. Keating Contracting.
