Despite rainy weather that led to the cancellation of Lynbrook’s official outdoor Memorial Day ceremony, members of the Lynbrook Fire Department and Tally-Ho Engine 3 still gathered Monday to honor local heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service.
At the Firefighters Memorial on Sunrise Highway, Lynbrook Fire Department chiefs saluted the memory of four Lynbrook volunteer firefighters who were killed during World War II during a Memorial Day service held under rainy skies.
Later in the day, members of Tally-Ho Engine 3 conducted their own wreath-laying ceremony honoring Ex-Captain Jeff Wiener, a Navy corpsman who was killed in Iraq on May 7, 2005 while serving on patrol with his Marine unit. Wiener’s memorial stone is located in front of the village’s Doughboy Monument. According to department officials, Wiener joined the Navy shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks.
