Lynbrook students, school officials and community members gathered on May 23 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with the launch of the district’s new Freedom Trail initiative.

The trail stretches from North Middle School to South Middle School, passing along Atlantic and Union avenues and through the heart of the school district. Along the route, visitors can scan 50 QR-code placards to learn about important moments in American history as well as Lynbrook’s own past.

Developed in partnership with the Village of Lynbrook and the Lynbrook Historical Society, the project features photos, stories and historical information, including images of the village’s first police headquarters and the original Lynbrook Theatre. The placards will remain in place through the July 4 weekend.

Junior Jackson Bowler, one of the student organizers, said the project became much larger than he initially expected and brought together students and staff from multiple departments. Fellow junior Mikayla Torres said the trail encourages residents to reflect on the nation’s history while looking toward the future.
