Students and staff across the Lynbrook School District marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with ceremonies honoring the victims and first responders.
At West End Elementary School, students and staff gathered outside alongside district administrators, parents and Lynbrook Fire Department volunteers. The fifth-grade chorus performed in honor of first responders, while other students shared poetry and messages of thanks.
At Waverly Park Elementary School, students Jak Kagdis and James Kolm led their peers in the Pledge of Allegiance before students stepped outside their classrooms and joined hands to form a human chain stretching through the school’s hallways.
Lynbrook High School also held an observance, during which Principal Matthew Sarosy read the names of alumni and community first responders who served during the attacks. Throughout the day, television screens around the building displayed interviews with students and family members affected by Sept. 11.
The districtwide observances gave students an opportunity to remember those who died, recognize the service of first responders and learn about the lasting impact of Sept. 11 on their community.
