Lynbrook firefighters welcome wounded warriors for Oktoberfest weekend

Six wounded service members will visit Lynbrook for a weekend of events beginning Friday, Sept. 25, as part of Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, according to Vice Chairman Steve Grogan.

As of September. 24, the Oktoberfest event has been rescheduled for October. 3 due to inclement weather.

The Lynbrook Fire Department, which is part of the organization, welcomes wounded service members to the village each September. This year’s group will arrive Friday evening in a caravan, passing beneath an American flag suspended from ladder trucks from the Lynbrook and Malverne fire departments.

On Saturday morning, the group will tour the Nassau County Firefighters Museum at Museum Row before returning to Lynbrook for the village’s Oktoberfest at Greis Park. There, they will join Lynbrook firefighters and local veterans from the American Legion.

“At the fest, Lynbrook firefighters will be selling JetBlue raffle tickets with the drawing that afternoon,” Grogan said. “JetBlue is a sponsor of Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, which is a 501(c)(3) charity that was formed in 2004 to help our wounded service men and women.”

The organization’s Wounded Warriors Car Show, originally scheduled for Sept. 20 at Greis Park, has also been postponed because of inclement weather. The event has been rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with gates opening for cars at 9 a.m.

The service members will return Sunday to the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.
