On Saturday, April 18, Malverne Little League Opening Day, the Malverne Village Board and the Havern family unveiled the new Bernie Havern Way street sign at Whelan Park’s baseball fields. The street sign’s unveiling was announced at the board’s recent meeting on April 8.

Sunday, April 19, Congregation Shaaray Shalom held its Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah, service. The service included speeches by Rabbi Yechiel, guest speaker Rabbi Menachem Creditor, and Mindy Perlmutter, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island. There was also a video which featured an interview with Egon Salmon, a Holocaust survivor who passed away in 2022.

Knit for Food had its sixth annual ‘Knit-a-Thon’ fundraiser last Saturday, April 11. The 12-hour knitting marathon fundraiser raised over $550 thousand nationally, a $20 thousand increase from its 2025 outing. Over the past five years, the fundraiser amassed $1.7 million, and including this year, its total will eclipse $2.2 million.

Malverne Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Easter event, the ‘Bunny Hop and Shop,’ the morning of April 4. The event had fun events for children and families, including face painting and balloon animals. Kids also took pictures with the Easter Bunny.

The West Hempstead School District has announced that West Hempstead Secondary School junior Sergio Rodriguez Ayala Jr. has been selected to participate in the 2026 Hispanic Scholarship Fund Youth Leadership Institute, a national program that will take place this summer in Los Angeles, California.

Local nonprofit Believe at Bellaire hosted its second annual ‘Hoppy Hunt’ at Harold Walker Memorial Park on April 4. The event included an Easter Bunny photo station, arts and crafts, popcorn and cotton candy booths, a talent show, a pizza eating contest, and a spelling bee. The three contests had $25 rewards. The titular hunt took place at the end of the event.
