Dozens of residents gathered at Harold Walker Memorial Park on Aug. 1 for the annual Lakeview Day celebration, continuing a community tradition that has brought neighbors together for more than three decades. Organized by St. John’s Baptist Church, the event featured a morning parade through the neighborhood followed by a full day of activities celebrating Lakeview’s history, culture and community spirit.
Families visited informational booths hosted by local organizations and community groups, while children enjoyed games and activities throughout the park. One of the day’s highlights was the annual youth basketball tournament, which drew young athletes to the courts for friendly competition and encouragement from community leaders.
“Don’t take this time for granted,” professional basketball player Bryce Harris said to the kids. “Basketball is fun, but if you really want to take it seriously, it can become your livelihood.”
The annual celebration remains one of Lakeview’s signature traditions, bringing together longtime residents and newcomers while highlighting the neighborhood’s strong sense of community and providing opportunities for local organizations to connect with residents.
“This is Reverend Sheila’s vision,” Pastor William Thomas said. “so that your talent can be seen and shown off.”
