The village is preparing for its annual village-wide garage sale to take place across Malverne homes on Oct. 10. This will be the sixth time Malverne will host the garage sale, happening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For a $10 permit fee, village residents can sell goods they no longer need.
Village officials and organizers expect there to be thousands of people from around Long Island and the surrounding area to come check out the sale.
According to Malverne Village Clerk Jill Valli, the village is rapidly approaching matching last year’s count of 160 homes being involved. There will be a map showing all the homes in the sale available on the Malverne Village website by September 24. The permit fee largely covers administrative costs, including the making of the map.
Organized by Rod Perry and his life partner Howard Zeitlin, they started the tradition during Fall of 2020 as a way to get people out of their houses after COVID-19 restrictions were beginning to ease.
It also was a way to reduce the amount of trash that was piling up in Malverne dumpsters. Malverne’s Department of Works and Sanitation was handling more trash than usual, and Perry thought this would be a better way for Malverne residents to get rid of their unwanted goods.
“This way everybody could move all their stuff along, DPW could have one big day of taking out trash and it would be good for everyone,” Perry said.
Perry approached then-mayor Keith Corbett with the idea, and after the success the first one had, it grew year over year. The first one had 135 homes participating, while last year had 160 participants.
“It evolved into a way for residents to monetize some things they no longer wanted, but more importantly to get outside shoppers into the village,” said mayor Tim Sullivan.
The garage sale has become a destination for collectors, antique lovers and bargain hunters from Malverne and the tri-state area. Now, with all the people from outside the village coming in, it has also become a major day for small businesses in Malverne.
“I’ve had many of the cafes and delis tell me that they have done some of their best business on that particular day,” Perry said.
Perry hopes that this garage sale will be even bigger than last year’s and inspire other villages to follow suit with their own garage sales. He acknowledged how important this event has become for Malverne residents.
“Its a really good community event,” Perry said. “I know people look forward to it because on our Facebook page, ‘I Love Malverne,’ people start asking in the springtime, ‘do we know the date yet?’”
