Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Malverne marked the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Oct. 4 with its annual blessing of the animals, a tradition that brings together parishioners and their pets in celebration of the patron saint of animals.

The blessing of the animals is a longstanding Catholic tradition held around the feast day of St. Francis, who is remembered for his love of animals, nature and all living creatures.

The annual gathering gives pet owners an opportunity to recognize the companionship their animals provide while asking for their continued health, safety and well-being.

Dogs, cats and other pets are traditionally welcomed at such services, where clergy offer prayers and blessings for the animals and their owners.

For many families, pets are an important part of everyday life, and the ceremony offers a way to celebrate that bond through faith and community.

The tradition also reflects St. Francis’ teachings about kindness, compassion and respect for all living things.

Our Lady of Lourdes has participated in the annual observance in previous years, joining other area churches in recognizing the feast day and the special relationships between people and their pets.
