A multicar crash on the eastbound Southern State Parkway between exits 17 and 18 caused major traffic delays during the evening rush hour, according to a report from the Lakeview Fire Department.
The department reported that a motorist experienced a medical emergency and struck 10 other vehicles, leaving multiple people injured.
Nassau County Police Ambulance Bureau personnel and Northwell EMS responded to the scene and transported multiple patients for medical treatment. The number of people injured and the extent of their injuries were not immediately available.
Lakeview Fire Department Squad 413 worked to clear fluids and debris from the roadway and reopen the eastbound lanes.
The crash caused significant congestion along the parkway, with traffic backups extending to local side streets and westbound lanes.
The cause of the initial medical emergency and the circumstances surrounding the crash have not been independently confirmed. Additional information from State police was not immediately available.
