St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church brought its congregation and the West Hempstead community together Oct. 4 for an anniversary celebration honoring the church’s history of faith, fellowship and service.
The celebration included a worship service centered on children and families, followed by a community gathering with food, coffee and anniversary activities.
St. Andrew’s held its first worship service on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1947. In the years following World War II, congregation members helped construct the church using available materials, including surplus airplane crates repurposed as flooring.
The church has remained active in West Hempstead through programs such as Little Saints Preschool, Vacation Bible School and community outreach initiatives.
Little Saints Preschool is also marking its 25th anniversary this year, having opened Sept. 11, 2001.
The anniversary gathering offered an opportunity to recognize generations of church members while celebrating St. Andrew’s continued commitment to welcoming families and serving the surrounding community.
