Rain fell throughout the afternoon, but there was no shortage of Ram Pride at West Hempstead Secondary School’s homecoming football game on Sept. 28.
The combined West Hempstead/East Rockaway varsity football team celebrated its first homecoming as the Rockin’ Rams with a 32-21 victory over Elmont, earning its first win of the season in front of a West Hempstead home crowd.
The homecoming celebration was originally scheduled for Sept. 26 but was postponed because of the nor’easter. Despite the wet weather and change in schedule, the West Hempstead community turned out to support the Rams. Leading the way on the field was running back Tristen Rose, who rushed for 173 yards and four touchdowns to help secure the victory.
The rain continued throughout the game, but so did the activity in the stands and along the sidelines. West Hempstead’s cheerleaders and marching band performed throughout the afternoon, bringing school spirit to the rescheduled homecoming celebration.
For West Hempstead Secondary School, the afternoon marked more than the football team’s first victory of the season. Students, families and community members gathered for the school’s homecoming traditions while also marking the first West Hempstead homecoming for the newly combined Rockin’ Rams. The team will look to build on the victory as it moves through the remainder of the season.
