An individual was arrested after allegedly attempting to break into Young Israel of West Hempstead and start a fire near the synagogue's entrance at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, according to a statement from the congregation.
The synagogue reported that the individual struck the glass entrance with a bat but was unable to break through. The person then allegedly brought a burning lawn sign to the entrance and attempted to start a fire near the building. The flames went out on their own.
A passing motorist called 911, and Nassau County police responded, arresting the individual at the scene, according to the synagogue.
The congregation's security team also responded, and detectives received video footage of the incident.
The synagogue's Security Committee said it is in contact with Nassau County police and Homeland Security and plans to review existing security measures.
"I have been in direct contact with Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder," Legislator Olena Nicks said. "The Nassau County Police Department is working alongside other law enforcement agencies to protect the congregation and surrounding community. "
The incident remains under investigation. No motive has been established in the information provided, and the suspect's identity and charges have not been released in the congregation's statement.
"Our community remains strong, united and undaunted," Rabbi Joshua Goller said. "Our doors will remain open and our services and programs will continue as scheduled."
