The freight train known as Massapequa’s boys lacrosse team made one final stop Sunday evening at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.

The Chiefs’ offense hummed like a locomotive once again, producing at least four goals in every quarter of a 19-9 victory over West Genessee (Section III) in the New York State Class A championship game.

Massapequa put a stamp on its third state title and first since 2019 with eight straight goals after the Wildcats got within 9-8 with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter. Junior Rocco Spallina had four goals to lead a balanced attack. Freshman Jake Byrnes and junior Nolan Wieczorek added hat tricks, and senior Tyler Byrnes and junior Dylan Milio chipped in two goals apiece as the Chiefs netted 19 for a third consecutive championship game.

They beat Syosset, 19-5, June 2 for the Nassau Class A crown and took down Sachem North, 19-6, June 6 for the Long Island title.

“These kids worked hard not only all season but all offseason,” Massapequa coach Kevin Catalano said. “We have so many talented players and our depth was a big reason we were able to get this done. It feels as awesome as I thought it would.”

The Chiefs outscored West Genessee 14-4 over the last three quarters after the teams were deadlocked at 5 after the first.

Massapequa had seven different goal scorers during the decisive 8-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters. One of those was Spallina’s third of the day that made it 11-8. He finished a length-of-the field play that started with a takeaway from junior Dominick Antonelli and transitioned through junior Michael Ippolito and Tyler Byrnes.

“The offense was really clicking,” Catalano said.

The defense and senior goaltender Peter Konstantinakos did their part as well, holding the Wildcats to single goals in the second and fourth quarters.
