Thomas Mascia, a West Hempstead resident and New York state trooper under investigation by state police for a shooting incident, turned himself in this morning, Jan. 27. His parents, Thomas and Dorothy, joined him.
Last October, Mascia claimed, while pulled over on the Southern State Parkway, an unidentified driver shot him. The incident occurred near Exit 17, by West Hempstead, on Oct. 30, around 11:45 p.m. Mascia claims he had stopped to help a person he thought to be in distress before being shot.
Several inconsistencies in Mascia’s story and a lack of body camera footage, led a state investigation to conclude he had violated official policy and falsely reported the incident.
In November, state police publicly released their conclusion and Mascia was suspended without pay. His trooper ID, duty weapon and badge were taken from him.
Mascia was under criminal and internal investigation. He now faces several charges, including tampering with physical evidence, falsifying reporting a crime, and official misconduct. His parents face charges of criminal possession of a firearm.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly and New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James will make an announcement regarding the shooting incident at 12:30 p.m.
