Over 20 of Bellmore’s best performers are preparing for three special shows throughout the month of May. The Bellmore Players, a musical group affiliated with Congregation Beth Ohr, will hold a series of cabarets to raise funds for CBO’s Hebrew school.
There will three shows at the CBO Merrick Annex. They will be held on May 3 at 2:30 p.m., May 13 at 7 p.m. and May 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person.
Event Producer Ira Levy is one of the founding members of the Bellmore Players. 26 years ago, he and other local artists assembled to share their passion for performance while supporting local causes.
“I personally love music,” Levy said. “We’re doing this first and foremost to raise money to support the community, and, of course, to have fun… The fundraising angle is for the kids in the Hebrew school you know, in the school to provide more resources and tools for learning.”
“The temple does one of these cabarets every year, and this is my first year with them,” said Music Director Bruce Bider. “I was most eager to come aboard… It’s just a general treasure trove of popular songs ranging, oh my goodness, ranging from operetta to Carole King and Billy Joel, with a lot of Broadway in between.”
Melissa Berman, a Bellmore resident and employee at the Herald, will sing at the cabaret.
“I’ve been doing theater a little over 20 years… I heard about the cabaret run by Ira Levy, and I went out, I auditioned and joined,” she explained. “It’s always a lot of fun because you get to pick what song you want to sing and bring your own life and flair into it.”
The Bellmore Players were a special opportunity to pursue artistic growth and make new friends within the neighborhood.
“My experience has been really nice,” Berman said. “It’s genuinely a place where people uplift each other… You’re coming together for your love and passion of theater, of singing, of Broadway and wanting to showcase your talents and having fun while doing so.”
The show offers many attractions, including a rendition of “No Business Like Show Business” from Annie Get Your Gun, which took Broadway by storm in about 80 years ago.
The cabaret also features ballads, dramatic pieces and instrumentals of all kinds for all ages.
