Meet Rabbi Sara Birnbaum of Congregation Beth Ohr

Rabbi Sara Birnbaum’s journey has taken her from Boston to New Jersey, Massachusetts, Manhattan and beyond, leading to her arrival as Congregation Beth Ohr’s rabbi on July 1.

Birnbaum’s career began in social work, which transitioned into work for Jewish nonprofits and religious schools. She began her journey to become a Rabbi in 2007.

“I felt like there was more that I could give the community,” she said.

“It's been a month, and it's been such a blessing,” she said. “I feel very, I feel very embraced by the community. There are so many opportunities for programming, for education, for prayer… what I really love so far about our congregation is that we're so open to like trying different things, figuring out what speaks to people in their spiritual life and what they want to learn.”

Rabbi Eytan Hammerman, a friend of Birnbaum’s, celebrated her new position with Congregation Beth Ohr.

“We rabbis are fortunate to accompany people on their Jewish journeys, always trying to help individuals add meaning to their lives by pairing our ancient Jewish knowledge and practices to our contemporary reality,” he said. “Rabbi Birnbaum has had quite the Jewish journey herself, with many turns and detours leading her here to Long Island. I have been fortunate to watch her as she’s taken these steps and can say without reservation that the Jewish community of Bellmore (and beyond) is so lucky to have her in this role.”

Hammerman described Birnbaum as a person who “walks the walk,” combining her love of Judaism with a passion for making our broader world a better place.

Nadine Lewis, president of Congregation Beth Ohr, said the right decision was made in selecting Birnbaum.

“Few decisions are more important to a synagogue than choosing its rabbi,” she said. “After a thoughtful and thorough search, our congregation is thrilled to welcome Rabbi Sara Birnbaum to Congregation Beth Ohr.”

From their first discussions and meetings with Rabbi Birnbaum, Lewis said it was clear that she shares the values that have always defined Congregation Beth Ohr including warmth, inclusivity, lifelong learning, and meaningful relationships. Her passion for building Jewish community, inspiring Torah learning, and connecting with people of every generation made her an outstanding choice to lead their congregation into the future, she said.

Lewis was excited by Birnbaum’s unique combination of experience as a rabbi and licensed clinical social worker, serving congregations, schools, camps, and communities, helping people navigate life's joys and challenges with compassion, wisdom, and empathy. Her rabbinic work includes teaching, pastoral care, mentoring B'nai Mitzvah students, and creating engaging opportunities for Jewish learning for children, teens, adults, and seniors.

“We are looking forward to her teaching at our Hebrew school, Community Hebrew High School and our new five-day-a-week after school enrichment program, the OHRchard,” Lewis explained. “As we begin this exciting new chapter, we invite the entire community to meet Rabbi Birnbaum, join us for services and programs, and experience the warmth, scholarship, and joyful spirit she brings to Congregation Beth Ohr. We are excited for all that lies ahead and look forward to growing together under her leadership.

“A graduate of The Jewish Theological Seminary, Rabbi Birnbaum believes that Judaism comes alive through relationships, participation, and shared experiences,” she continued. “Whether leading inspiring worship, facilitating thoughtful discussions, or simply sitting with a congregant who needs a listening ear, she is committed to helping every person feel seen, valued, and connected.”
