Two juvenile girls are facing assault charges after a series of attacks involving four teenage victims near a Merrick shopping center Friday night, according to Nassau County police.

Police said the incidents happened around 9:30 p.m. on May 22 near 2099 Sunrise Highway.

Detectives said a 15-year-old girl reported being punched multiple times in the head before falling to the ground, where she was repeatedly kicked in the head. She was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

A 14-year-old girl also told police she was dragged to the ground and repeatedly struck in the head.

Following an investigation, officers initially arrested a 13-year-old girl without incident and charged her with two counts of third-degree assault.

Police later announced the arrest of an additional 14-year-old girl accused of participating in the earlier assaults. Detectives said further investigation determined the 14-year-old was also involved in another nearby attack involving two 15-year-old girls.

According to police, the juvenile allegedly dragged the victims to the ground by their hair and repeatedly punched them in the head.

The 14-year-old defendant was charged with four counts of third-degree assault. Both juveniles are scheduled to appear in Family Court at a later date.
