More than 300 seniors gathered at Levittown Hall on Aug. 1 for State Sen. Steve Rhoads' second annual Senior Health Expo & Resource Fair, spending the day connecting with health providers, community organizations and neighbors while learning about resources designed to help them age safely and independently.
Rhoads, who represents East Meadow, Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford and surrounding communities in the Fifth Senate District, hosted the event as a one-stop resource fair featuring more than 40 organizations offering information on veterans' services, Medicare assistance, home care, wellness programs, grant opportunities and other support available to older adults.
Attendees also received free blood pressure screenings, visited a technology help table staffed by Rhoads' office interns for assistance with smartphones and tablets, and enjoyed live music, bingo, trivia, cornhole, giant Jenga, crossword puzzles and refreshments throughout the afternoon.
The program also featured an interactive tai chi demonstration highlighting the exercise's health benefits and an estate planning seminar that provided practical guidance for future planning.
"Our seniors have spent a lifetime building our communities, and they deserve every opportunity to age with dignity, independence, and confidence," Rhoads said. "This Expo was designed to be a one-stop shop where seniors could access important health screenings, connect with resources and services, learn about programs available to them, receive technology assistance, and enjoy a day of fun and fellowship with friends and neighbors."
Rhoads said seeing more than 300 seniors participate in the event reinforced the importance of ensuring older adults have access to the services and information they need. He thanked the dozens of community organizations, health care providers, nonprofit partners and volunteers who helped make the event possible.
The Senior Health Expo & Resource Fair is part of Rhoads' ongoing efforts to support older adults through educational workshops, community partnerships and programs aimed at improving quality of life throughout the Fifth Senate District.
