Snowstorm slams Bellmore and Merrick, travel disrupted across South Shore

Residents in Bellmore and Merrick woke up Monday to significant snowfall as the Feb. 23 blizzard swept across the South Shore, blanketing neighborhoods and slowing travel throughout the day.

As of Monday morning, Bellmore and Merrick had recorded approximately six inches of snow, according to local observations and weather reports. Additional accumulation was possible as bands of heavy snow continued moving through the area.

The storm prompted Gov. Kathy Hochul and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman to declare states of emergency ahead of the system’s peak, urging residents to stay off roads unless necessary.

The National Weather Service issued a Blizzard Warning for Long Island through Monday evening, citing strong winds and periods of near-zero visibility.

School districts across the area — including the Merrick Union Free School District, North Bellmore School District, and North Merrick School District — closed for the day due to the hazardous conditions. Community institutions were also affected, with the Bellmore Memorial Library shutting its doors.

Transit was also affected, with the Long Island Rail Road suspending service early Monday, saying trains would resume once conditions are safe for crews and riders.

Local fire officials reminded residents to clear snow from vents, keep hydrants accessible, and avoid unnecessary travel as plows continue working to clear residential streets.
