Ann DiPietro: Bloomsday Bonus

Posted

Dear Great Book Guru,

I was at the 15th annual James Joyce Jaunt here in Sea Cliff and as usual I was amazed at how funny, how poignant, how meaningful, how contemporary “Ulysses” - written over a hundred years ago - remains to this day. I do feel that I could get more out of it, but I’m not sure where to turn.  Any recommendations?

James Joyce Jaunter

Dear James Joyce Jaunter, the program/guide written by Dan DiPietro and distributed at the Jaunt was very helpful, but for a detailed analysis, Patrick Hasting’s “The Guide to James Joyce’s Ulysses” is the place to turn. Hasting’s offers plot summaries, historical and biographical explanations, maps, and critical analysis - all in a very approachable style.

He “solves” for us the many puzzles included throughout the novel by Joyce who said his goal was to “keep the professors busy for centuries.”   His chronology of Bloomsday - June 16, 1904 - the single day that ULYSSES takes place – brings order and insight into the book while his humorous asides make for a truly enjoyable read.

Many of us find Joyce’s work to be intimidating when faced with some seemingly obscure reference - Hasting’s Guide is the solution…. Highly recommended.
