Sea Cliff’s singing teacher Jimmy Moore brought nine of his students to the stage at My Father’s Place in Roslyn to highlight the work they have done this summer on songs their choice. The Aug. 5 show gave students the opportunity to perform songs of any genre that the enjoy.

Jimmy and Janis Moore run the Moore Music studio in Sea Cliff where Jimmy offers singing lessons to children and adults. Jimmy explained that he prefers the idea of putting on a show to holding a recital, which he said he does not believe to be entertaining. He emphasized that entertaining audiences is a major goal for him as a singer.

When he first started teaching, Jimmy said, he would tell students what to sing but over time decided to let them choose songs themselves.

“I’m trying to give them access to what it is they want to do,” he said.

The Moores held an alumni show at the studio in 2023, and one former student invited My Father’s Place owner Michael “Eppy” Epstein. Janis said that after the show, Epstein approached her and Jimmy and invited them to have students perform at his venue.

Children and adults were among students who performed on Aug. 5. Britney Goldberg, a graduate of the Institute for American Musical Theater, has been Jimmy’s student for more than seven years. The 24-year-old Plainview resident praised Jimmy for his teaching, saying she could not recommend him enough.

“I could not sing, even holding a microphone when I first started,” Goldberg said. “I was so quiet, and now you can hear me from outside the house. He changed my entire voice, and I owe him everything.”

Goldberg performed “When You Come Home/Climbing Uphill” from the musical “The Last Five Years.” She said she chose the song because she and the character are going through similar experiences as they audition for roles.

Janis said the students were supportive of each other and did “very very well.”

“They were so enthusiastic for each other,” she said, “and it’s a beautiful thing when you see that.”

Roslyn High School student Adriana Pincic, 16, has been Jimmy’s student for roughly three years. She began lessons with him after a New York State School Music Association judge recommended him. Pincic said being his student has helped her gain confidence in herself musically and otherwise.

Pincic performed “When He Sees Me” from the music “Waitress.” She said it is a song she has known and enjoyed for a while.”

“I recently revisited that song, I think last year,” Pincic said, “and I just fell in love with it all over again. And I really started taking time into singing it more seriously.”

Pincic also sang “For Good” from “Wicked” as a duet with Jimmy, which she described as a “last-minute” thing.

“I just felt like it went really well with our dynamic,” she said, “and it’s such a touching song.”

Jimmy also performed a variety of songs throughout the show. He said two of his goals are to demonstrate that anyone can sing any song and to entertain through the expected and unexpected. He added that this group of students wanted to do well, and he was glad to see them succeed.

“It went beautifully,” Jimmy said. “Everybody brought their whole self to the stage.”
