Since stepping down from Mayor, Ed Lieberman has been providing educational lectures for local communities to help teach residents about different parts of history they might not be familiar with. On Nov. 14, Lieberman will be back with his latest lecture about the life and art of Vincent van Gogh at the Sea Cliff Library.

Lieberman started these lectures back in 2021 at some of the assisted living centers on the North Shore. He has presented on numerous topics, creating presentations and doing research to educate the public on various topics.

“When I left mayor ship I still was practicing law and being involved in the business association, but I found myself with a little more free time. One of the local assisted living homes asked me to come in and perform a lecture,” Lieberman said. “I am still doing that at many of the assisted living homes but, a few months back Camille Purcell (the library director) and I met and I started doing some programs at the library as well.”

Lieberman has done presentations on Theodore Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy, and the history of Flag Day. He said that after a recent trip to France he found a passion for van Gogh’s work and knew this was the next topic he wanted dig into and educate the community.

“I first started at the library with a presentation about Flag Day, and citizenship, then I started to develop other programs like Theodore Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy,” Lieberman said. “I took a trip to France in September, and I had an interest in van Gogh to begin with, so for the last six months or so I have really immersed myself in the lifetime and art of van Gogh.”

The main subject of this presentation is the painting The Starry Night, one of van Gogh’s most famous pieces of art. Lieberman says that he will talk about van Gogh’s journey, some of his most famous pieces of artwork as well as what he learned while studying Van Gough on his trip to France.

“It is a slideshow presentation where I integrate not only photographs of van Gogh, but some of the other people I talk about, his artwork and my real time myself being in Provence last month and some of the things I learned while there,” Lieberman said.

Lieberman said that many of the presentations he has created are designed to further educate the public on topics that they might not know a lot about, but can relate to.

Lieberman said that many of the presentations he has created are designed to further educate the public on topics that they might not know a lot about, but can relate to. He added that these lectures give the public an opportunity to be educated on a subject they otherwise wouldn’t have spent much time on.

“I’m finding that the people that come to the library are getting a little bit of knowledge both visual and verbal on a particular subject that they could probably all relate to,” Lieberman said. “Presenting different subjects, ideas and concepts, gives the people the opportunity to be otherwise educated on a subject that they might not spend too much time on.”

The presentation is open for all residents to attend on Nov. 14 at the Sea Cliff Public Library.
