Free memory screening for 5th State Senate district residents

Residents in the 5th State Senate district will have the opportunity to attend a free memory screening event this month, thanks to a collaborate with the offices of State Sen. Steve Rhoads and Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center.

The 5th State Senate district includes parts of East Meadow, Wantagh, Seaford, Bellmore and Merrick.

The event will take place Oct. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Hicksville Public Library, 169 Jerusalem Ave., Hicksville.

The screenings give residents an opportunity to take a proactive step in caring for their brain health. These simple, quick and noninvasive “healthy brain checkups” assess memory and other thinking skills through a brief series of questions or tasks. Although a screening does not diagnose a particular illness, it can indicate whether someone should speak with a physician about additional testing. Identifying potential memory concerns early can help individuals and their families address underlying conditions and connect with helpful information and resources.

“I encourage everyone to take a proactive step when it comes to their health and the health of their loved ones,” Rhoads said. “Just as we regularly get screenings for other parts of our bodies, it’s important to give our brains a checkup, too. We welcome everyone in our community to take advantage of this free service, ask questions, and take an important proactive step toward protecting their health and planning for the future.”

Appointments are required, and space is limited. To schedule a screening, residents should call Rhoads’ district office at 516-882-0630.
