U.S. Representative Laura Gillen attended the monthly meeting of the Wantagh American Legion Post 1273 on March 18 to thank veterans for their service and discuss efforts to support Long Island’s veteran community.
Gillen, who represents 18,000 veterans in New York’s 4th Congressional District, has co-sponsored bipartisan legislation such as the Seniors at the VA Act and the Protect Veterans Jobs Act. She said one of her top priorities in Congress is ensuring veterans receive the care and resources they deserve.
“One of my most sacred responsibilities as a Member of Congress is ensuring that we fulfill our obligations to our veterans,” Gillen said. “I’m proud to work with both parties to ensure that Long Island’s veterans receive the care and resources they deserve.”
She also spoke about her opposition to potential cuts that could impact services at the Northport VA and highlighted her ongoing partnership with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation to develop veteran housing in Island Park. She thanked the Wantagh American Legion for hosting her and for their continued service.
John Sottnik, vice commander of Wantagh American Legion Post 1273, said members appreciated the opportunity to discuss key issues with their representative.
“On behalf of Wantagh American Legion Post 1273, I want to thank our Congresswoman for taking the time to meet with us and discuss her understanding and her stance on issues facing our members, both as citizens and veterans,” Sottnik said.
He also acknowledged Gillen’s willingness to work on bipartisan initiatives. “We appreciate her dedication to working civilly on bipartisan issues, such as being tough on crime and VA funding to better the lives of her constituents.”
