As part of National Safe Boating Week, observed May 16 through May 22, the Town of Hempstead is reminding residents that safety is paramount when enjoying local waterways.
The town’s Bay Constables will conduct free vessel safety checks on Saturday May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Curtis E. Fisher Wet Marina boat ramp.
The inspections are designed to confirm that required safety equipment is onboard and operating properly before the busy summer boating season begins. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling (516) 897-4100.
Town officials said the program is intended to support National Safe Boating Week by giving residents an opportunity to ensure their vessels are fully prepared before heading out on the water.
“Our Bay Constables play a vital role in protecting those who enjoy our bays and waterways, and these checks are a simple step that can make a significant difference in protecting you and your loved ones,” Supervisor John Ferretti said in a statement.
During the inspection, Bay Constables will review safety items such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, navigation lights, sound-producing devices and registration documentation. Boaters will also have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance on best practices for safe and responsible navigation.
In addition to vessel safety checks, the Town of Hempstead has made it easier for residents to meet state boating requirements by providing free boater safety courses. Under New York State’s Brianna’s Law, all operators of motorized watercraft must complete a certified safety course.
“Boating is one of the many great recreational opportunities we have here in the Town of Hempstead,” added Supervisor Ferretti. “Taking a few minutes for a safety check helps ensure that every trip on the water is a safe and enjoyable one for you, your family and others around you,”
