The Long Island Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra brought its distinctive sound to Temple B’nai Torah during an Oct. 20 concert that introduced the congregation to something new.

Known as LIMAGO, the ensemble began in 1957 as an adult education class sponsored by the Levittown School District. Since then, it has performed for audiences throughout Long Island, New York City and Westchester County, with appearances at libraries, houses of worship, universities and community gatherings.

The orchestra features mandolins, mandolas, guitars, mandocellos, string bass, drums, accordion and vocalists. Its repertoire spans international folk music, light classics, classical works and popular selections from the Great American Songbook.

Temple representatives described the concert as “truly wonderful,” saying the ensemble’s sound evoked the experience of listening to a large orchestra in New York City.
