Seaford sees two rescues in three days

Two very different rescue operations unfolded in Seaford within three days last week, as emergency responders helped people in distress in the community’s waterways and wooded areas.

On Aug. 9, two men were rescued after a jet ski overturned near the Great Island Channel, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

A Good Samaritan pulled both men from the water before Nassau County police Marine Bureau officers arrived, police said. The men were brought to Treasure Island Marina, where a Nassau County police ambulance was waiting.

The operator was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition, while the passenger declined medical attention.

Police did not provide additional details about what caused the jet ski to overturn or how long the men had been in the water.

The incident came two days after another rescue at Cedar Creek Park.

At about 2:06 p.m. Aug. 7, Nassau police responded to the park after a 70-year-old man entered a wooded area to retrieve his model airplane and was unable to find his way out.

The Nassau County Police Department Emergency Service Unit and Aviation Unit responded, with assistance from the New York Police Department Aviation Unit.

The aviation units located the man and helped extricate him from the woods, according to police.

The man was conscious and alert when he was found and was airlifted by Nassau County Aviation to a nearby hospital for treatment and evaluation.

The two incidents involved very different circumstances, but both required emergency responders to locate and assist people who had encountered trouble in areas where reaching them could be difficult.

In one case, a bystander intervened before police arrived. In the other, specialized aviation resources were used to locate a man who had become unable to find his way out of a wooded area.
