Seaford High School senior Meridith Goldberger has been actively involved in student life and is adding another title to her resumé – ex-officio student member of the board of education.
Meridith was sworn into the role, now in its second year, at the July 8 reorganization meeting. Although she will not vote or attend executive session, she will provide a student perspective and give an update at each business meeting. She was selected for the position as the senior class president and is also the president of the Drama Club and Model Congress, a member of the color guard, cross-country team, dance team, track team and Shared Decision Making Committee.
The Seaford Harbor Elementary School graduate says she looks forward to being able to represent the student body, voicing ideas, sharing concerns and highlighting events that are occurring across the entire district.
“I am also excited to hear about decisions that are made and see how they directly impact our community,” she said. “With this opportunity, I am also hoping to grow my leadership skills and build a stronger connection between the students and board of education. If the board has questions regarding the students, I will be able to provide proper feedback to them.”
To prepare her report for each meeting, Meridith said she plans to have conversations with her fellow students. With the help of Superintendent Adele Pecora, she will also reach out to administrators from the other three schools to discuss any updates or activities that involving the students.
“I feel that this position is valuable for Seaford because students embody a large population in our community and decisions the board makes can have a direct impact on the us,” Meridith said about her role. “It also gives students the opportunity to speak about issues that affect them and give insight to what is working well in the schools and also any challenges they may face. Being part of the board shows that students opinions matter and are valued.
