Seaford teen earns Eagle Scout by making park more welcoming

After nearly 13 years in Scouting, Zachary Lohrer, of Seaford’s Boy Scout Troop 690, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout — the highest honor in Scouting — with a project that’s already making a difference in a neighboring community.

Local and county leaders, including State Sen. Steve Rhoads, Nassau County Legislator Kayla Knight, and Town of Hempstead Councilman Chris Schneider, joined Troop 690 and the Lohrer family at Zachary’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor to celebrate the milestone.

To earn the rank, Zachary led a project at Phelps Lane Park in North Babylon, where he raised funds to purchase and install environmentally friendly benches. The additions give families and visitors safe and welcoming places to rest, while also reflecting a commitment to sustainability.

Rhoads praised Zachary for his perseverance, leadership and community service. “This achievement shows what years of hard work and character can build,” the senator wrote in a press release, congratulating Zachary, his family, and the Troop 690 leaders who supported his journey. “I’m excited to see how he continues making a positive impact.”

Zachary’s work, local officials said, underscores the value of Scouting in developing young leaders and community-minded citizens. Troop 690, based in Seaford, has a long tradition of producing Eagle Scouts, but the distinction remains rare — only about 6 percent of Scouts achieve it.
