Veterans and their families received access to support services, health resources and community programs during State Sen. Steve Rhoads’ third annual Veterans Appreciation Breakfast and Resource Fair, held Oct. 17 at the Museum of American Armor.

The event brought together more than 200 veterans and family members for a morning of recognition, entertainment and opportunities to connect with organizations dedicated to assisting those who have served in the military.

Nearly a dozen organizations participated in the resource fair, offering information about veterans’ benefits, health care and community services. Among them were the Long Island State Veterans Home, Catholic Health, which provided free flu shots, the Nassau County Police Department and Paws of War, an organization that supports veterans through animal companionship and other services.

“Those who have worn our nation’s uniform have made extraordinary sacrifices to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day,” Rhoads said. “We can never fully repay our veterans for their service, but we can make sure they know that their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated. It was an honor to welcome more than 200 veterans and their families to this year’s breakfast and connect them with organizations that provide meaningful support to our veteran community.”

Nassau County Legislator Tom McKevitt and Assemblyman John Mikulin also attended the event, joining veterans, their families and community organizations in recognizing the contributions of military service members.

The Museum of American Armor provided a fitting setting for the gathering, with historic tanks, military vehicles and artifacts on display. Attendees had an opportunity to explore the exhibits while connecting with fellow veterans and learning about available resources.

Music was provided by the Band of Veterans and Friends, a group of veteran musicians whose performance brought attendees together for dancing and entertainment.

The breakfast was supported by several community organizations and volunteers, including the Civil Air Patrol, Boy Scout Troop 192 of Bellmore and Project Thank a Cop. Rhoads also acknowledged Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and the Museum of American Armor for their support.

Local businesses contributed food and refreshments, including Embassy Diner, Town Bagel of Plainview, Crumbl Cookies of Merrick, Duck Donuts of East Meadow and Dunkin’ Donuts.

Beyond recognizing military service, the annual gathering emphasized the importance of maintaining connections between veterans and the organizations that can assist them with their needs.

“Events like this remind us that honoring our veterans is about more than one day on the calendar. It is about showing up, building relationships, and making sure those who served our country continue to feel supported by their community,” Rhoads said. “Thank you to all our volunteers, participating organizations, and community partners who gave their time and talents to recognize our veterans. Most importantly, thank you to our veterans and their families for all they have given in service to our country.”
