Wantagh families got a taste of Halloween a little early Aug. 17 as local elected officials and community volunteers teamed up for a summer trunk-or-treat benefiting the Family and Children’s Association.
State Sen. Steve Rhoads partnered with Nassau County Legislator Kayla Knight to host the event, which combined games and activities for children with a collection drive for FCA, a nonprofit that provides resources and support to children, families and individuals across Nassau County.
The event was spearheaded by Rhoads’ legislative interns, Emma Stein and Lauren Gomez-Nieto. The Wantagh Lions Club also helped organize the evening, with children visiting creatively decorated vehicles to collect candy while their families donated essential items to FCA.
The collection will support FCA’s programs and services, which focus on strengthening families, promoting healthy communities and helping individuals achieve greater stability and independence.
“Events like this are what community is all about: bringing families together, creating a fun experience for our children, and finding ways to help our neighbors who need a helping hand,” Rhoads said.
Rhoads also credited Stein and Gomez-Nieto for helping bring the event together and thanked Knight, the Wantagh Lions Club and residents who contributed to the collection drive.
“I’m proud of Emma and Lauren for spearheading this event and grateful to Legislator Knight, the Wantagh Lions Club, and everyone who donated to FCA,” Rhoads said. “Their generosity will make a meaningful difference for local families and individuals.”
The event also drew support from Town Councilman Chris Schneider, Assemblyman David McDonough’s representative Shannon Fredricks and legislative interns.
For Rhoads and Knight, the evening provided an opportunity to combine a family-oriented event with a community service effort, giving residents a chance to enjoy the festivities while supporting an organization serving Nassau County residents.
The summer trunk-or-treat is part of Rhoads’ continued efforts to connect residents with local organizations and opportunities to give back. Organizers said the event demonstrated what can happen when elected officials, community groups, volunteers and residents work together around a common cause.
