To deter this behavior and increase pedestrian safety, the county, with the approval of the State Legislature, is installing a total of 56 speed cameras in school zones — one in each district. more

The Seaford School district has increased its fund balance from 2.6 percent to 4 percent, from $1.58 million to $2.5 million. Alexandria Battaglia, an external auditor from R.S. Abrams & Company, told Seaford Board of Education members at the Oct. 2 school board meeting that while the unassigned fund balance was now at the legal limit and other school reserves have increased, additional money is needed in designated reserve funds in order to cover the school district’s $79.4 million liability. more
The Book Fairies, a charity that collects reading materials for people in need throughout Long Island, will host its first “Bowling for Books” event at AMF Wantagh Lanes on Columbus Day from noon to 2 p.m. Proceeds will be used to raise money to purchase electronic book readers for children who have extended stays in local hospitals. more

Miss Wantagh 2014 and her court are busy planning a host of service activities for the 2014-15 school year. Kayla Knight, Miss Wantagh 2014, and her court were at the community’s Sept. 11 ceremony. First-runner up, Kaitlyn Von Runnen, made a quilt in honor of the victims, made from strips of paper to read “I will remember.” more
It began as a simple act of kindness — assisting elderly neighbors by providing transportation to and from medical appointments — that spawned an organization called Friends in Safe Hands, or FISH. This group is a non-sectarian network of concerned volunteers providing friendship and service to the elderly. more
