The Fourth of July is celebrated annually with fireworks and barbecues across the country. Merrick has a tradition that few communities follow. Each year, the Merrick Historical Society offers local folks the chance to read the Declaration of Independence line by line, as it was read by colonists in 1776. This year’s reading took place at the gazebo at Merrick’s Long Island Rail Road station. Lawrence Garfinkel, the historical society president, led the reading. more
