Emmanuel Habimana, a Rwandan filmmaker and lecturer who as a young boy in 1994 survived the Rwandan Genocide, addressed students in March at Calhoun High School. He was a guest speaker in social studies teacher Dr. David Goldberg’s “Voices of the Past” class, which deals with human rights violations in the 20th and 21st centuries.

These memories date from 1992, Habimana said, when he was 7 years old. The harassment of his family — day and night — was so regular and frightening that Habimana asked his parents, “Did you choose to be a Tutsi? Why are we being called snakes, cockroaches?” more
