Well, it wasn’t a white Christmas, but it got plenty white once the big day had come and gone. A blizzard some compared to the legendary storm of 1996 left Nassau county frozen in more ways than one. A snowy snaggle entangled the area after nearly two feet of snow blanketed Long Island, halting train service and rendering roads impassable. The National Weather Service said Nassau County received between 16-24 inches of snow and reported wind gusts of up to 56 miles per hour at JFK Airport.

Updated 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 27. A fierce winter storm that rolled into Bellmore-Merrick around 9 a.m. on Sunday continued to pound the community through Monday morning, dumping 12 to 20 inches of snow on the ground and buffeting the area with winds from 15 to 50 miles per hour. Temperatures dipped into the teens.

Thursday was dig-out day throughout the South Shore after a near-blizzard smacked the area from late Tuesday through early Thursday morning. Almost a foot and a half of heavy, wet snow pressed down on roofs, cars, streets and parks, closing schools for most students and bringing shoveling chores to most adults.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey has announced that for the thirty one hour period from 12:01 a.m. Feb. 10, through 7 a.m. Feb. 11, there were 190 auto accidents in the Nassau County. Of those, 34 resulted in injuries.
