Nassau County Court Judge Jerald Carter ruled last week that a statement police obtained from Caleb Lacey confessing to starting a Feb. 19 North Lawrence fire that killed four people may not be presented by the prosecution unless the defense attorney tries to argue to the jury that the confession never occurred.

Last Friday, I saw the flashing lights of a police car shining into our living room window. I looked out and saw a police officer and two other men who had gotten out of their cars, all trying to entice a large and frightened dog. I suspect they were trying to read his collar, which told us that he belonged to someone and could be far away from home.

Lynbrook staff volleys to raise funds for PTA event

The Lynbrook Council of PTA’s sponsored its annual Staff Volleyball Game and Middle School Kickline performance recently.
Funds raised from the event will go toward scholarship funds for graduatin Lynbrook High School seniors.

The year that Helen Gebhard was born, the United States began construction on the Panama Canal. The New York City subway system opened on October 27, and the first New Year’s Eve celebration was held in Times Square, then known as Longacre Square, in New York.
On December 26, 2009, Gebhard celebrated her 105th birthday among friends and family at Sunrise of North Lynbrook on December 26, 2009. “I am crying, but I think they’re tears of joy,” she said.

At first glance, sweetly smiling sixth-grader Ally Murphy of North Bellmore might seem out of place on a football field. Truth is, she feels quite comfortable there, so much so that she captured second place in the Tri-State NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Championships in the 12-13 year-old division at the Meadowlands Arena recently.
