I grew up in Valley Steam (as did all of my large immediate family) and returned after college. Now, as a renter looking to invest in a home in this community, I am concerned with the same issues that have been discussed by the candidates running for local office.

Before I was the assemblyman for Valley Stream, I spent seven years in village government. The level can be very challenging because of the burden of mandates the higher levels of government place on the villages. We need good people who can get the job done and not cost the people a lot of money in the process.

It is without reservation that I endorse Joseph B. Margolin for mayor of Valley Stream. I have known Joe personally and professionally for over 40 years. He is a man of integrity and passion. Joe knows what hard work means. If Joe believes in a cause, he is a champion you want in your corner.

My family has lived in Valley Stream since 1954. My three siblings and I, along with a niece and nephew, have graduated from the Valley Stream school system, elementary school through high school. Valley Stream has always had exceptional organizations for all ages run by extraordinary residents of knowledge and character.

In reviewing the flier being handed out by the Citizens Independence Party, I am a little concerned that the candidates for this party do not understand how things really work. They are laying the blame for their increase in flood insurance on the village administration.

For the past four years, I have lived in the Gibson section of Valley Stream. About one and a half years ago, I decided to begin a civic association (the Gibson Community Association, www.gibsoncommunity.com). In the beginning, I was unsure about how to meet people in the community who were willing to work to make their community a better place. Just when I was about to call it quits, I noticed a letter published in the Herald announcing a meeting at the Gibson Train station regarding FEMA flood maps. After contacting the woman in charge of organizing the meeting, I decided to attend and share my thoughts.

As a former mayor of Valley Stream, I still reside in our village with my family, and care very deeply about its future. I would like to endorse the candidacy of Ed Fare and the United Community Party team of Vincent Grasso, Dermond Thomas and Robert Bogle.
