Seven-year-old East Meadow resident Jack Egan was riding in the family car when he announced he wanted to have a car wash to help people with cancer. “I wanted to raise money for charity,” said Jack, “I asked my friends if they could help and most said OK.”

On Friday, Sept. 21, the Dakota Design Center in Merrick will host a “Pinkout” event to raise breast cancer awareness. The showroom, at 1565 Merrick Road, will host four Long Island-based breast cancer charities — the 1 in 9 Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition, the NY Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program at Adelphi University, the Carol M. Baldwin Research Fund and the F.A.C.T. Foundation.

A full court press against cancer

Shootout Cancer, a non-profit organization which raises funds to assist those battling cancer, hosted its fifth annual basketball event on June 16 at Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst to raise money for families afflicted by the disease. Participants donated $10 and enjoyed basketball activities and competitions while spectators donated $5 to the cause.

Dozens of walkers recently took part in the annual Bellmore-Merrick Relay for Life, a walk-a-thon fundraiser that raises money to support the American Cancer Society’s research, education and advocacy efforts.
The event was held at Merrick Road Park, next to the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve.
