Bay Park Fire District gives money back to taxpayers
“On behalf of the taxpayers of the Bay Park Fire District, I would like to thank Assemblyman Weisenberg for his leadership in passing legislation that will allow us to provide residents with much-needed tax relief without compromising the fire district’s ability to respond in emergencies.” So said Roger Humes, a commissioner of the Bay Park Fire District, in response to Weisenberg’s authoring of a law — at the request of the Bay Park Fire District — that will offset local property taxes. more

Saying yes to artificial turf in Lynbrook
Heated discussions about a possible artificial-turf field for the district have ended — at least until May. At the Lynbrook Board of Education’s last budget work session, on March 23, trustees voted 4-3 to offer a proposition for a $4.6 million artificial-turf complex in the upcoming district election. The money, trustees said, will come from the district’s reserves, and its Renovation and Improvement of Facilities fund. more

Gov’s school aid plan hits local districts hard
Bellmore-Merrick area school administrators said this week that, yes, their districts could cover proposed state aid cuts with their unrestricted reserve funds and federal stimulus dollars, as proposed recently by Governor Cuomo. But, they quickly noted, doing so could leave them with little to no cash on hand for emergencies, and even jeopardize the districts’ long-term fiscal health. more
