When the Kansas City Royals played in the wild-card round of the American League playoffs last week, it was their first appearance in the postseason in 29 years, but that’s not how it used to be. There was a time when the Royals were truly regal, when they were perennial contenders. Their greatest player then was George Brett, and their best pitcher was a workhorse out of Oceanside High School named Dennis Patrick Leonard.

On Sunday, September 28, Malverne high school played host to its third annual “Pursuit of Pride” band competition, featuring the talents of bands from Eastport South Manor, Midland Park, NJ, Floral Park, Mineola, Copiague and Brentwood. Since Malverne was host, its marching band, the Pride of Malverne, did not compete, but did give the crowd a performance — and what a performance it was.

Expectations could not be higher for the Hofstra women’s soccer team. The Pride was picked first in the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) preseason poll and return seven starters off last year’s 10-6-3 team that reached the CAA semifinals before falling to James Madison.
