The Confide Drug and Alcohol Counseling Center honored officers from the Rockville Centre and Nassau County police departments, an investigator from the state attorney general’s office, a District Court judge and one of its own staff members at its 10th annual Criminal Justice Partnership Awards, a luncheon ceremony on Oct. 7 at the Maple Avenue firehouse.

Nearly 200 students, parents and educators joined local officials and members of the law enforcement community last Sunday morning for the annual Substance Use Awareness Walk at the Skelos Sports Complex. South Side High School social worker Naomi Bisk, the event coordinator, offered an introduction that made its message clear: Make healthy choices — stay alcohol-, drug- and cigarette-free.

All South Side Middle School students attended the “Challenge to Choose Wisely” assembly on Sept. 7. The purpose of the presentation, in its second year, is to stress the importance of good decision making as well as the dangers of risky behavior.

At a time when the use of opiate prescription drugs and strong, cheap, readily available heroin has created an epidemic of addiction on Long Island, people in need can turn to Confide Inc. for help. On any day of the week they will find Art Rosenthal, 66, the executive director and driving force behind the outpatient drug and alcohol counseling center, in its basement offices in the medical building at 30 Hempstead Ave.

South Side Middle School students in grades six, seven and eight attended a panel discussion titled Challenge to Choose Wisely on Sept. 8, their second day of classes, focusing on the challenges that await them in their teenage years. The theme of the hour-long program, which was presented three times during the day and tailored to each grade level, was making safe and smart choices.
