In 1971, Stanley Barkan’s daughter, Jacqueline Mia, lay in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. Two of her four kidneys — yes, she had four — had to be removed because they had become nephritic, or inflamed, which could have led to a deadly infection. She was 2 years old. more

The Baldwin lions hosted a Korean culture event on January 30th at the public library. Ms. Kyung Won Pak, director of the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project, contacted Lions president Dianne Cattrano and suggested a get together. Intrigued by the idea, Cattrano contacted the library and the project began picking up steam. more
I watched “Miracle on 34th Street” three times over the weekend. I love the film, not because it’s a Christmas classic, but because it is, to my mind, one of the great social statements on American culture. more
